In chapter six of To Kill A Mockingbird, the importance of concealing the truth in order to maintain social contracts becomes clear. Jem tells his father, Atticus, that he lost his trousers during a game of strip poker with Dill and Scout, when in fact he lost them squirming beneath a fence in the Radley’s garden. Jem lies for fear that breaking the social contract between he and his father would harm their relationship, and even risks his own well-being to protect the lie. This reinforces the vitality of social contracts in Maycomb’s society
Jem and Dill are gathering a stronger friendship while Scout begins to feel left out of their friendship. Because of this she spends more time with the neighbours then Jem and Dill. She tells Scout that Boo is still alive and it is her idea that Boo is the victim of a harsh father, a “footwashing” Baptist who believed that most people are going to hell. Maudie adds that Boo was always polite as a child. She says all the rumours are false. During this the other two (Jem,Dill) try to get a note to boo trying to meet him,but are caught in the act by atticus.
Summer Arrives , Dill,Scout, and Jem begin their games again. The first things they did is roll ew other in a tire.Scout rolls in front of the Radley steps, and Jem and Scout panic. , and because of what happened Jem got the idea for their next game called boo Radley. As the summer passes, their game becomes more diverse and deep into the game they act out the how Easley family.EventuallyAtticus catches them and asks if their game has anything to do with the Radely family. Jem lies to Atticus and He goes back inside. The kids wonder if it’s safe to play their game anymore.
To the children boo is seen as spooky yet shady character. In chapter one he is described as a ‘malevolent phantom’ but is also referred to as an ‘unknown entity’
But I would choose ‘malevolent phantom’ because it links more to my point of him being spooky.
At lunch, Scout has a scuff up with Walter for getting her in trouble but Jem stops her and invites Walter to lunch/dinner. Walter and Atticus discuss farm things.Atticus follows Scout outside to ask her if Anything is wrong, he is curios, to which she tells atticus nothing is wrong she just dosn’t feel the best. She tells him that she does not think she should go to school anymore and suggests that atticus teaches her at home. Atticus says no, but will keep reading to her, he promises.
Scout prepares to go to school for the first time, something she has been anticipating. Once she is finally at school she realises her teacher dosn’t have much patients with children ,this is miss Caroline fisher. Miss Caroline dosnt like the fact that atticcus has educated scout to read. a boy named Walter Cunningham has not brought his lunch. Miss Caroline trys to give him a quarter, telling him that he can pay her back tomorrow but Walter keeps refusing, Walter’s family is very poor and walter never takes something he can’t pay back for.
The living conditions of uk prisons should be tightened.
Yes the living conditions should be tightened because right now murderers walk around playing Xbox and communicating with other prisoners, they are not really serving a prison sentence, more just having a good time.
Let’s compare our prisons to another nations, for this example, America. America is very well known for its legal system, how it works and of course it’s prisons. Murderers in american prisons are in a cell 23/7, they are serving 25 years to life and some even face death row. American prisons are certainly much stricter than ours.
But in some way that is the British way of doing it, to some extent you can not compare our prison system to Americans because we are a totally different country and our laws are on different scales.
On the other hand, their are citizens in Britain that purposely commit crimes just to put themselves back in prison, this may be because they need to or because it is so relaxed they enjoy it,now this can be seen as a good thing for them because it allows them a solid three meals a day, and a roof over their head but the prison system is already crowded so all the people doing this accumulates and over crowds our prisons and people that need to be locked up are not being.
Yours sincerely zak bartley.
Harper lee introduces the theme of social contracts in chapter one when Dill,Jem and scout start talking about the face of Boo Radley and Dill says “let’s try to make him come out. At this point you can tell every one was shocked, this may in its self be breaking a social contract because no one ever went into the Radley house, that was made clear by Jem saying “if you wanted to get yourself killed all you had to do was to knock I’m the Radleys door”. Another main point would be when Dill dares Jem to run up to the Radley house and touch it, in this time or maybe in their social contract or in fact maybe just Jem, he never turns down a dare this was also made clear scout stating that Jem never declined a dare.
yes we should, it is our business, is it not? why should others that have not been given permission be allowed to look through our personal activities. its atrocious, think about how you would feel if someone was going through all your personal things, including bank accounts and all your shopping goods. Just think of what people could access, what they could purchase and abuse, just, think.
NO,NO,NO,NO. why in the world would we think that. lets face it, the internet is one big open world that anyone with some kind of knowledge in the computing world can access so much, including your details. but what can we do, it our choice to use it and if you don’t like it, tough, don’t use the internet then.
